Living Room

Out of the four corners in your living room, your best bet is to light three of them. When doing so, focus one of those lights on an object, be that a plant, an artwork, or a striking chair. For the best effect, combine floor lamps and table lamps – get some with a downward glow and some that shine upward. Use your down glowing lamps to create as many reading spots as possible. If you have an overhead fixture, put it on a dimmer so that you can control the light intensity easier.

Dining Room

Make the table the brightest spot in your dining room so that it can draw people in. To do so, use a pendant or a chandelier above the table and limit the total wattage to 100. As for the rest of the spots in the dining room, use indirect lighting as it's relaxing and flattering. To give this room a subtle glow, add a pair of small table lamps on a sideboard or matching sconces on the wall above.

Bedroom

When choosing contemporary designer lighting for your bedroom, aim for a cosy ambiance. To achieve that, your best bet is placing reading lamps or sconces by the bed, however, make sure they are not pointed directly at it. If you have track or recessed fixtures, angle them away from the bed and point them toward the dressing area. On a low table, put a small, intimate lamp with a tinted low-wattage bulb to mimic candlelight and make a more romantic ambiance.
