Brazilian jiu Jitsu is one of the most popular martial arts based on grappling and ground fighting, where you develop the skill to control the other opponent through techniques that will force him/her to submit. In order to properly train BJJ (Brazilian jiu jitsu), you are going to need proper clothing. You will need a jacket and trousers or a gi (also known as a kimono) and a belt. Sometimes rashguard is worn under the gi but this is optional. As there are different types of GIs, here are some guidelines for properly choosing your most suitable one.
Firstly, the cut or the fit and the size of the jiu jitsu gi are the most essential part in order to be comfortable while training. There are different cuts you can choose from, for example, slim, short and long with different sleeve length and width and the decision should be made according to your preferences and the one which will be the most comfortable. Regarding the size, there is a general outline and you can choose A1 (under 1.70m), A2 (under 1.80), A3 (under 1.90m), A4 (under 2.0m), A5 (over 2m). You should always check the specific brands' measurements though, as they may vary
Another important component of the gi is the weave. There are four main types. The single weave which is the most common is a combo of lightweight and a convenient price. The downside is that due to being lightweight it is easier for the opponent to grip onto you. The double weave is thicker and heavier than the single weave. It also more durable. However, due to its thickness, moving is harder so it has to fit perfectly to be comfortable. Next is the gold weave which is a cross-weave between the single and the double weave, something like a hybrid that offers more durability and thickness. Nowadays, it is replaced by the pearl weave which is light, looks like small pearls and provides a greater durability.
The soul of the jiu jitsu gi is the belt. Even though some brands sell the gi with a white belt, you can purchase a suitable one with the proper features. Also, some people consider it only a means to keep your jacket ties, but to others, it has significant meaning. The sequence for belts sowing rank in BJJ is white, blue, purple, brown and black. The BJJ belt differs from belts used in other martial arts as it has a black or red bar running along one end of the belt known as the rank tag. On all the belts the rank tag is black, whereas on the black one it is red. Also, some belts are given stripes or tags and there can be a maximum of 4 tags that can be put on the rank tag.
Often, belts are made of standard canvas cotton, and sometimes you can find belts from the same material as the gi. Most importantly, the belt needs to be thick. Finally, the size of the belt doesn't have to be the same as your gi, because they need to be wrapped around the body so, a larger one will be also a good choice.
There are some good reasons as to why you should wear a belt in jiu jitsu. It shows interest and attracts the attention of the opponent. Then, it shows the rank of the practitioner and it divides the instructors from the students. Finally, the belt is a symbol of personal growth and the development of your skills.
