Freedom Movie Review & Film Summary (2015)

Being one of the most inspiring movies of 2015, Freedom is a brilliant and exciting drama that shows us how a family escapes to freedom and finding the religious. The story is centred around two main points – one of a family of escaped slaves trying to escape to Canada and how a former slave-ship Capitan went to write important songs of the abolitionist movement 110 years earlier. These songs are sung by the characters and sometimes the Freedom movie feels like a spiritual musical that enlightens the faith of God.

The story begins with the introduction Samuel Woodward (played by academy winner Cuba Gooding Jr.) and his family finally escape from the wretched Monroe Plantation in the hopes to fled to the North and achieve freedom with the help from underground Quaker activist Thomas Garrett (played by Michael Goodwin). The notorious slave hunter Plimpton was sent by the plantation owner to bring them alive especially Samuel's wife Vanessa.

After going through everything that has happened to him, he cannot sing the song Amazing Grace, but his mother reminds him of the story of the song's composer, John Newton, in a series of flashbacks. John was the Capitan of the first slave ship from Africa to Charleston and among those passengers in the ship was Samuels great-grandfather. During the travels, Newton released that the cruelty of trading people like he went through a religious conversion and started writing songs that would stay his memorable legacy.

By combining these two separate narratives, the Freedom movie gives you the feeling that many religious movies fail to deliver, those warm feelings, those goosebumps and the light that is the faith in Christ. Timothy A. Chey did a great job writing the script by embarking on themes that are inspirational,  the kindness and love of the human heart and one in the darkest moment find themselves guided by the words of our one and true God.

The Musical aspect of the movies is exceptionally good. The songs there “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”, “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child” and “Hard Times” are among the most inspirational and powerful songs I have ever heard.

The Freedom movie has made a great impact in my life and has been inspirational for a lot of people around the world. The best thing I liked about this movie is how the movies is made to catch the emotionally interested in the views and gives them a valuable history lesson delivered by a teacher who has great connecting skills and keeping the viewers interested until the end.
